Together with several organisations, notably Galgos Ethique Europe and l”Arche de Levriers, GRH has worked on the foundation of the Collectif Europeen pour la protection des Levriers, in English known as the European Collective for the Protection of Hounds.
Following discussions and consultations with the office of the Member of European Parliament Mrs. Striffler, it is clear that the only way forward is a collective and sustained effort by European organisations and European participation of the public. No small feat indeed and we are well aware that it will be a difficult uphill climb. But the bigger the challenge, the stronger the determination!
The first step is to show that the suffering and treatments of hounds, be it for hunting or for coursing or competition, is a concern for many across Europe. Therefore a petition has been launched with the aim to get as many pan-European signatures as possible. The essence of the petition is to request that regulation is put in place to ensure the same level of protection and wellbeing for hounds as for companion dogs. A difficult and precarious angle, we are aware of that. With a positive result and enough European support of the petition, Mrs. Striffler is willing to consider more concrete action within the EU Parliament.
The English translation of the petition is as follows:
The Greyhound isone of the oldestbreeds in the canine world. It is also one of the most
exploited breeds: Greyhounds racing in Ireland, Sighthounds Galgos in
Spain for hunting and racing, the Podengos Portugal for hunting ..
60,000 Galgos are executed each year in Spain. In France, greyhounds called
“Primitives” Group 5 of the canine International (Section 6: Pharaoh
Hound, Section 7: All podencos and podengos) are used for hunting despite the
ban on hunting with hounds Group 10 the canine world. To stop cruelty to
greyhounds, these disparities and ambiguities, we call the “status”
of companion animal for all Greyhounds in Europe with implementation of measures for protection and control necessary to stop the abuse they are the subjected to. Symbol of animal abuse in Europe, symbol of lack of respect for all dogs used as “instruments”, as in
hunting, racing or working and then sacrificed thousands each year for
benefit and entertainment.
WE REQUEST THE RECOGNITION OF EUROPE GREYHOUND “PET” GREYHOUNDS & PROTECTION IN EUROPE. We demand recognition as companion animal for the greyhound in Europe so that its protection and defense are strengthened. We are seeking urgent implementation of measures to protect and defend greyhounds across Europe where the racing industry and hunting is threatening their well-being and life . -
Control circuits operations, handlerss of greyhounds, activities related to instrument racingand hunting – Monitoring of conditions of life, production of quotas and statistics by independent federations, etc..
